These Spring Cold Remedies Are Better Than Taking A Pill by Cheryl Myers, RN

Here’s some advice I wrote a while back if you are still suffering with bugs and colds.

Prevent Colds or reduce your symptoms with my natural remedies

The dreaded cold!  There are so many bugs around at the moment; many of my clients are arriving with runny noses and bad coughs, spreading their germs! My boyfriend has one, I’ve had one in the past few months, now I feel another creeping in.  I understand why I’m getting them; I’m detoxing regularly, so bugs that have been lying dormant in my body, are now coming to the surface. This is great for me, as the more toxins and bugs that leave my body, the less likely I’ll get ill in the future.

However, why are you getting colds? If you are getting ill often, you need to strengthen your immune system to prevent them, or at least work hard to stop them from developing into a horrible ones.

Beautiful Colours – Eat the Rainbow!

Over the years I’ve learnt a lot about nutrition; still lots to learn, that’s what I love about our interesting and complex bodies.  Anyway, I’ve got a few techniques to help prevent or stop colds from developing.

  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, all colours of the rainbow daily. Eat and Drink them preferably raw (or lightly steamed), then you get all the nutrients from that particular source.  Eat raw with all meals and eat this before warm food, this will help build up digestive enzymes, then you will digest, absorb and eliminate effectively.   Absorption is so important to prevent malnutrition. Deficiencies = Disease!
  • Ensure you are getting enough good bacteria to support your immune system. Try a good unpasteurised natural yoghurt, sauerkraut , fermented vegetables, Kefir, tofu, Miso or a good pro biotic supplement like Nu u Nutrition Bio Culture Complex
  • Drink lots of lemon water, strengthen the immune system to help fight bugs. I enjoy lemon water tepid or slightly warmer, especially in the winter; it’s a lovely soothing drink.
  • Eat lots of garlic. Chop the garlic into tablet form when a cold is brewing; have about 2 cloves a day until it’s gone. However, you could prevent colds by having a clove or 2 a day.  Garlic breath is not always the best! However, garlic is a powerful antioxidant with antimicrobial, antiviral and antibiotic properties.
  • Add ginger to lots of salads, stir fry’s or smoothies. Ginger is delicious and really adds flavour.  Ginger is anti-inflammatory and can really help with a sore throat and reduce mucus so you can breathe again.
  • Honey is nice and sweet to perk you up; it tastes amazing and has lubricating properties for a dry throat. Honey also reduces the life span of a colds, due to its immune boosting properties.
  • Water is great at flushing out the bug. You should be drinking 2-3 litres of tepid water a day.  Just ensure you are drinking lots of fluids if you have a cold.
  • Wrap up and keep warm. Try a nice warm Epsom salt bath to relax your muscles to help you fight your cold.
  • Rest, sleep and relax. When we are ill we need to rest and look after ourselves; most of us rush around, eating rubbish and feel worse.
  • Stretching is a good idea. When we have colds we tend to tense up.  Try a good stretch daily to loosen your muscles.
  • Finally, if you are really congested try this NeilMed Sinus rinse. I find this natural rinse very helpful by clearing mucous and bugs from the body in a gentle way.  You need to fix the problem not mask the symptoms with junk like paracetamol or other synthetic cold remedies.

Remember the stronger your immune system, the less likely illness will coming knocking!
