Happy Belly!

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a horrible condition.  I meet many clients in clinic with this, so I thought I would give you some advice and tips on how to improve your symptoms.  First of all let’s highlight what some of them are:

Main symptoms:

  1. pain – usually colicky and spasmodic
  2. diarrhoea or constipation (switching between both)
  3. wind (lots of it)

Other symptoms:

  1. constantly feeling full
  2. nausea, heartburn or indigestion
  3. urinary frequency
  4. backache
  5. tiredness
  6. anxiety and depression……..

The two main causes of irritable bowel:

  • Stress – muscles respond to stress dramatically.  Your brain and gut are closely connected.  If you feel stressed then so does your bowel muscles.
  • Diet – most of us eat food which is bland, made up of dangerous chemicals with a lack of natural clean roughage.

How to control irritable bowel:

  • Visit your Doctor so he/she can confirm the diagnose.
  • Peppermint oil capsules – this helps control the wind.  Drinking peppermint tea can also help.
  • Try and reduce stress in your life.  Talk to someone, see a counsellor.  Leave your stressful job and try a new career. Exercise, walk, swim, move more.  Try Yoga or meditation. Read a book. Go away for weekend breaks often. Try a mindfulness course.  There are many ways, research and give them a go.
  • Gradually increase the amount of fibre your are eating.  Fresh fruit and vegetables.  Wholegrains. A Clean wholesome diet. Remember slowly does it, otherwise wind could increase.
  • Cut down on bad fat – choose lean cuts of meat and reduced fat dairy products
  • Stop all convenience foods – micro meals, oven meals, takeaways, crisps, chocolate etc…
  • Warmth – a hot water bottle always helps or a soothing bath
  • Lots of filtered water – tepid – 2 -3 litres per day
  • Avoid caffeine
  • Alcohol is a GI irritant and often triggers IBS attacks, especially on an empty stomach (though small amounts of alcohol used in cooking are fine).
  • Carbonation in soda pop and mineral water can cause bloating and cramps.
  • Artificial sweeteners, particularly sorbitol, can trigger IBS pain, cramps, gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Coupled with the above options try the below to help immediately with IBS symptoms:

  • Wild Yam Herbal Enema – (wild yam root) anti-inflammatory helping relieve intestinal and urinary tract inflammation   Soothes spasm or muscle cramps (menstrual and hormonal stomach conditions) and relaxes muscles and nerves.  Also relieves IBS symptoms.
  • Colonic Hydrotherapy/Irrigation – helps sooth the colon removing irritants, toxins and wastes from the body to help relieve inflammation and calm the gut.

You must listen to your body if my tips don’t help them don’t do them.  You know best.

‘I have just finished a course of 3 colonics with Danielle.  I am 61 and never have really been interested in anything like this before, but after researching colonic irrigation, I decided to give it a go.  I was feeling quite sluggish. My stomach was feeling very bloated and uncomfortable.  Even after the first session, Danielle made me feel very at ease whilst having the treatment. I felt so much more energised.  I even got back into playing badminton again after many years.  After my three treatments I have definitely felt the benefits.

Danielle is very professional and I have recommended her to my friends who are thinking of having it done.  The experience has also made me take a good look at what I eat. Danielle has given me lots of very constructive advice, which I have taken note of.  All I can say, that from my experience, it has been very positive and I will definitely be going back to Danielle when I feel the need.’ J Chambers, Keynsham
